Top 10 Reasons to Visit Vail

A vibrant pedestrian village, incredible and accessible terrain, lodging and dining to suit every budget, a mix of locals and guests from around the world...Vail is the quintessential Ski Resort experience.

Founders Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton set out to create a world-class ski resort from Vail's earliest days. When Vail started running lifts in 1962, opening 7 legendary Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin were still just blueprints and a dream. Decades later, Vail is now one of the largest ski areas in the world and continues to push the limits on improving lifts, gondolas, on-mountain facilities, events, and helping to foster a dynamic town experience.

In 2015 Vail introduced another 6-passenger lift to replace Avanti Express Lift (#2) and this year Vail replaced Sun Up Express lIFt (#9) with a 4-passenger chair. This is the 8th lift upgrade Vail has made since 2007, proving a continued commitment to guest's experience year in and year out.

Nestled up to the base of the ski mountain, the village experience is at once timeless and vibrant. The highly regarded fine dining scene is matched by stellar shopping experiences. Looking for a fun place to unwind après ski? You'll have a hard time choosing which deck and drink special. Family and group friendly options abound with ice skating rinks, a high-end movie theater, ritzy bowling, sweets shops and event concert venues all within a few minutes' walk.

Whether you choose to stay in Lionshead, Vail Village, or Golden Peak, these areas are all within a short stroll or complimentary town bus ride from one another and each offer their own lodging, dining, shopping and lift access to the mountain. Whether you're in the market of a penthouse or condo, Vail has lodging offerings to suit every budget. Looking to really optimize your savings? Make sure to take advantage of our "off-peak" lodging deals and explore staying in the free Town of Vail bus serviced areas of East Vail and West Vail.

Foodies flock to Vail’s diverse and exciting culinary scene. Vail might be a small town in the Rocky Mountains, but you’ll find dining options to rival the world’s most vibrant cities. You can start your gourmet experience with a sit-down lunch on mountain at The 10th, complete with fuzzy slippers to replace your ski boots and incredible views. Once back in the Village, your options are seemingly endless, from Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese dishes with South American flare at Matsuhisa, the always creative and exciting Sweet Basil, to restaurants that celebrate more traditional classics like Lancelot.

Whether you love the feeling of gliding down a freshly laid carpet of groomed snow or revel in knee-deep powder, Vail has terrain to suit your style. Known for that light and fluffy Colorado powder, Vail also boasts the most groomed terrain on the planet. From the Front Side to the Back Bowls, there is intermediate-friendly terrain off of every lift, while experts can challenge themselves on iconic Vail runs and glades. Golden Peak and Bwana Terrain Parks offer small, medium, and large features for those looking for an added challenge.

Vail has unique Kid’s Adventure Zones all over the mountain, featuring banked turns, tunnels, and small glades. These fun and safe areas are perfect to build confidence and challenge your child’s skiing and riding abilities.

Learning how to ski or ride? Don't worry, there are two beginner areas on mountain!

Most people don't realize that when they first arrive at Vail, they are only seeing a small fraction of the terrain that awaits them. While Vail's Front Side has much to recommend it, the distinctive Back Bowls are Vail's defining characteristic.

The Legendary Back Bowls offer wide open skiing and amazing views. Start by exploring Sun Up and Sun Down Bowls, and work your way back to China and Teacup Bowls. China Bowl offers the only groomed blue runs in the Back Bowls [easily accessed via the Sourdough Express Lift (#14) on the Front Side]. If you are feeling adventurous, make your way all the way out to Siberia Bowl and the surface T-Bar style Mongolia Lift (#22) to access the far reaches of Inner and Outer Mongolia Bowls! When you're ready to take a breather, Vail Mountain's flagship restaurant, Two Elk, awaits on the upper rim of China Bowl.

One of the most beloved parts of the mountain, Blue Sky Basin is an experience unto itself. Journey from the Front Side, into the Back Bowls and then up Skyline Express Lift (#37) to reach this beautiful area that is renowned for its glades and meadows. Bring along something to grill at the complimentary Belle's Camp grills, or cozy up with a hot cocoa by the fire in this simple and rustic space.

Our team of ski and snowboard experts are unmatched in the industry. Hailing from around the world, Vail's Ski & Snowboard School professionals speak 22 different languages and come from many interesting walks of life - from ex-NFL players to former Olympians to long-time Vail locals.
