Vail Legacy Weekend

FRIDAY 2/14 

10th Mountain Legacy Parade
6:00pm-7:00pm at Base of Gondola One in Vail Village
Skiers dressed in traditional 10th Mountain Division Ski Trooper uniforms perform a Torchlight Ski Down to the base of Gondola One, followed by a parade of military veterans, also in traditional uniform, marching from Gondola One down Bridge Street, across the Covered Bridge and finishing at the 10th Mountain statue.

Vail’s newly-renovated Colorado Snowsports Museum will stay open until 8:00 p.m. after the parade for guests to visit and learn more about Colorado’s ski history through the new 10th Mountain Division exhibit anda special guest speaker.

Tales of the 10th
4:00pm at the Colorado Snowsports Museum
Acclaimed historians and authors tell fascinating stories of the famed 10th Mountain Division. A suggested $5-$10 per person donation. Members can reserve seats by calling (970) 476-1876 in advance. Seats will be released 5 minutes prior to the start of the program.  


SATURDAY 2/15

Meet the Colorado National Guard

Learn about the equipment, and meet the faces of the Colorado National Guard at the base of Gondola One by Los Amigos.

Black Hawk Helicopter Landing
12pm - 2:00pm, Eagles Nest Ridge
The National Guard will be landing a Black Hawk Helicopter on Eagles Nest Ridge and it will be on display at the top of Avanti Express Lift (#2). Come take photos, mingle with the Colorado National Guard and visit with our Ski Patrol dogs. 

Ski with a Soldier Historic Mountain Tour
10:30AM Meet at the Top of Lionshead Gondola
Ski with a soldier as you learn about the history of Vail. Ever wonder about the story behind a trail name at Vail? Like how Riva Ridge is named after a key battle that the 10th Mountain Division won during World War II, or how Vail founders Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton dropped into Sun Up Bowl for the first time and after commenting that it took forever to hike back up the mountain, decided to later name that trail Forever? To pay homage to Vail’s legacy, historical signs have been placed across the mountain, allowing guests to embark on a self-guided historical tour of the mountain. Space limited based on a first come basis. No reservations.

 

SUNDAY 2/16

Learn about the equipment, and meet the faces of the Colorado National Guard at the base of Gondola One by Los Amigos.

Ski Trooper Race
11:00am-1:00pm, Base of Gondola One
Modern day Ski Troopers from the Colorado Army National Guard will compete in three-person teams on the black diamond runs at the base of Gondola One. Spectate with food and beverages from Express Lift Bar or other base area establishments or on the paved area surrounding the snow-covered base area.

75th Anniversary of Riva Ridge
11:00am -1:00pm, Mountain Safety Center, Top of Mountain Top Express Lift #4
Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Riva Ridge. Meet at the top of Mountain Top Express #4 at 11am to warm up with hot cocoa while learning about the 10th Mountain Division's Battle of Riva Ridge, followed by a group ski down Riva Ridge ski run down to Vail Village.
