Spring Back to Vail

Spring Back to Vail is the biggest end-of-season bash in the Rocky Mountains! We end the season in style April 17 - 19 with some serious fun under the sun, including free live concerts, the infamous World Pond Skimming Championships, Bud Light après after-dark parties, base area giveaways, and so much more!

The closing day tradition of donning costumes and skimming across icy water holds strong as participants will careen themselves off a snow jump in the hopes of coming out on the other side in the 13th annual World Pond Skimming Championships. The spectacle defies the laws of physics and common sense as a panel of highly-skilled judges scores each competitor on distance, style, creativity and water resistance. Registration opens closer to the event.

Spring Back to Vail is presented by Vail MountainPepsiBud LightAudiSmith, and Town of Vail, and brought to you in part by GoPro, Helly Hansen, Liberty Skis, Vail Resorts Retail and Colorado Mountain Express.

The legendary World Pond Skimming Championships returns to Lake Golden Peak at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak base area on April 19, 2015.

The annual competition entails floatable (and sometimes sinkable) athletes launching themselves off an on-snow jump onto an icy pond in attempt to successfully exit the pond on both feet. Competitors will vie for both fame and glory in a showing that defies the laws of physics – and perhaps even common sense.

This year, two Champions will be crowned – the top male and top female competitor – who will each take home an Epic Pass for the 2015-2016 season and a pair of Liberty Skis.

World Pond Skimming Championships Rules:

  • All competitors are required to wear a CE certified ski/snowboard helmet.
  • Competitors who are legally intoxicated will not be allowed to take their run and will be disqualified.
  • Competitors may only use a single pair of snow skis or a single snowboard as a means to cross the pond.  No additional equipment or aid may be used (i.e. no water skis).  Zero points will be given in the distance category for using any skis wider than 11.5cm at mid-ski (waist).
  • No poles of any kind may be used.
  • Absolutely no inverted aerials into the pond.  You will be immediately disqualified.
  • Absolutely no diving. You will be immediately disqualified.
  • No starting above the start line.
  • Only one participant may attempt crossing the pond at a time.
  • Competitors may only attempt a crossing when the pond is clear of all people, equipment, debris, etc. The starter will signal when the pond and course are clear and a participant may attempt a crossing.  The starter has the absolute final say.
  • Do not try to ski/ride out the side of the pool.
  • Please exit only at the end of the pool.
  • If a competitor crashes before reaching the pond, they will be disqualified immediately (there will be no reruns).
  • All competitors may use the participant hot tub after their run.  Once full, as a new person gets in, the first person in gets out.
  • Each registrant who participates in the event on April 19th will receive a layer from Helly Hansen.
