Fishing in Vail

Fly-fishing is a beautiful way to relax, enjoy the summer weather and explore the some of the most serene spots on Vail’s many streams and rivers. For your first fly fishing experience, here’s a roundup of Vail’s best fishing spots, what equipment you’ll need, and a few other tips to prepare you for a day of fun on the river.

Book a Guide

Whether it’s your first time fly-fishing or you’re a seasoned pro, using a guide is the best way to spend a day on the river and give yourself the opportunity to get a few bites. Sample some of the West's finest fly-fishing with Vail Valley’s friendliest and most experienced guides service. Your guide will know what kind of flies to use, where to cast your line and where to camp out to get you the best spots in the Vail Valley. From half-day wades on small intimate waters to full-day floats down the mighty Colorado and everything in between, your guide can custom plan your trip. Gore Creek Fly Fishermen and Vail Valley Anglers are both pros and their knowledge is second to none.

Free Casting Clinics

Get some practice with your cast before heading to the stream. Gore Creek Fly Fishermen offers complimentary casting clinics daily at 10:30 a.m. in Lionshead Village next to the gondola. Whether you’ve never fly fished before or are just wanting to brush up on your technique, our expert staff will customize the clinic to meet your needs and answer any questions you might have.

Fly Fishing Basics

For first time fly-fishers, there is a lot to learn about fly-fishing before you hit the waters. Learn the lingo, what kind of knots you’ll have to tie, and more with this all-encompassing guide. There’s even pictures of the different flies you’ll be using so you can get a jump-start and impress your guide from the get-go.

What You'll Need

If you’re using a guide, they’ll provide all your essential gear, from fishing poles to waders. You’re responsible for getting your fishing license (which you can buy online here), and you’ll definitely want to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you’re fishing sans guide, here are a few essentials you’ll need. Waterproof waders are a must – they’ll keep you comfortable and dry as you reel in your catches. Wading boots are necessary as well, and as a beginner, felt or rubber-soled boots will do the trick. A hat will help protect you from the sun (and help you truly look the part of a fly-fishing expert). And polarized sunglasses are recommended to better spot fish, but they’re not necessary.

Top Spots at Vail

Rivers can change from day to day, so utilize Vail’s custom fishing report to get the most up-to-date information on river flow, fishing quality and professional tips to enhance your outing. In the Vail and Beaver Creek area, you’ll fish the Gore Creek, the Colorado River or the Eagle River. Gore Creek is a local favorite, as the water is typically clearer than others. For the best fishing on the Eagle River, stay above the Wolcott area where Milk and Akali Creek dump in. The convergence of these two streams will make the water below severely off-color.

Now cast your line, tip your hat back, and enjoy the day with the fishes!
