The Town of Vail

At Vail, the experience extends far beyond the mountain. Vail is linked by 3 lively base areas filled with shops, world class restaurants, bars and apres hot spots. Linked by pedestrian friendly heated streets, the village is a perfect place for a family stroll after skiing or a bar-hopping night out on the town. The countries largest free transportation system runs frequently, making it easy to access almost anywhere in the Vail area without touching your car. It's almost like the whole town is "ski in, ski out".

Vail is generally separated into a few distinct areas. (search Vail lodging by neighborhood). The main two base areas, where most restaurants and shops are located, are Vail Village, and Lionshead. Golden Peak is near Vail Village, and also offers access to the mountain as well as a beginner ski school area and lift.

Linked by a short free in-town bus ride, Lionshead and Vail Village are the lively centers, where most skiers and snowboarders head to and from the mountain during the day. The streets fill with pedestrians shopping, talking, heading to dinner and out to the nightlife options after dark.

Town Maps

The first thing you’ll notice is that the town of Vail is different than most Colorado ski towns. Vail started from sheep grazing land so it was a blank canvas, patterned after the European town of Zermatt. Cozy, without cars, the awesome mountain deployed in front as you walk leisurely down the quaint cobble stone streets.

Resort Information Center

Think of it as your own personal assistant. Our Mountain Information Center is your resource for reservations and recommendations on the hot spots and best-kept secrets in town. Opened daily, 8:00am – 5:00pm during the winter season. The office is located in the Arrabelle plaza at Lionshead.
